You might expect us to say something like “it’s better to give than to receive.” But if we truly look at it as God would have us, it’s better to give what we receive. Through God, we receive many things – our talents, finances, opportunities, possessions – and in return, He asks that we give back only a portion. It is through this commitment that we enable more hearts to be reached, more lives to be changed, more souls to be stirred, more families to be brought together and more hope to be shared. With Him, there is as much receiving as there is giving. And we are thankful for the resources with which we are entrusted through his faithful provision to each of you.

Should I tithe off my gross earnings or the net amount of my paycheck?
The most common view is that gross earnings is the amount of God’s provision, and the tithe should be based on one-tenth of God’s provision. Taxes are generally considered payment for the privileges and services provided by the government. Though scripture doesn’t necessarily use the literal terms "net" or "gross," it is important to note that the spirit in which we give is of greatest value to God. He tells us in II Corinthians 9 that “each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give; not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

What if I’m afraid that I won’t have enough money to tithe?
Giving 10% of your income to your church can be a big – and often frightening – commitment! But if scripture tells us to honor Him with our first fruits and our blessings will be overflowing, we must learn to trust that He is faithful to provide. God wants us to trust Him. Seek His guidance in how much you should give, and he will honor your faithfulness and obedience.

How should I tithe if my income varies from pay period to pay period?
Depending on which is more feasible for your situation, you can handle tithing with a fluctuating income in a couple of different ways. Some people choose to give exactly one-tenth of their earnings for each individual pay-period. Others estimate their total earnings for the year and give a portion of the total tithe each week throughout the year.

Can I designate my gift to a particular ministry?
Every dollar give to Avalon Church is used to support the global mission of Avalon Church; therefore, gifts cannot be restricted for use by a specific ministry.
